Window Curtains

Chances are pretty good that wherever you live has windows in it. Unless you live in a basement apartment, windows are standard in buildings today. And if you have windows in your home then you’re going to want something to cover them – or else the neighbors might just get an eyeful!

Kidding aside, window curtains are an important part of any home as they have several different functions. The most obvious function is to provide a window covering. Window curtains come in many different types of materials and thickness, and the type you select would depend on how much coverage you would like. If you would like to let a lot of natural light in while providing some privacy, a sheer window curtain would do the trick. Sheer window curtains come in a variety of colors, styles and materials with a voile or lace being the most popular.

Are you looking for your window curtains to provide privacy as well as some heat or cold insulation? The type of window curtain you’d be interested in would be one made of a thicker and heavier fabric. Some window curtains are uncoated, which means a tightly woven fabric is used for the construction of the curtain. A coated window curtain means that there is a rubber backing applied to the backside of the window curtain. This backing would be unnoticed by the person in the home, as the decorative side of the window curtain would be on the inside.

If you are looking for maximum insulation and light blocking then a blackout curtain could be the answer for you. These curtains are often well coated on the back side, or are lined. They are lined with a separate, coated fabric on the backside of the curtain to block light and heat. Blackout curtains are great in bedrooms (especially if you have eastern exposure) or if you are trying to prevent natural light from glaring on a television in a living room or a family room.

Window curtains play a large role in the overall look and feel of your home. They provide that finishing touch that is often needed to make a room feel “done”. Window curtains come in a variety of sizes, colors and patterns so with a little luck (and sometimes a lot of looking) you can find the perfect ones for your room. If you can’t find window curtains you like in a store or online, an option available is to have them custom made for you. Making your own window curtains at home isn’t that difficult either, if you have some basic sewing skills and a sewing machine available for use.

You’ll want to have window curtains on all the windows in your home. The type you select will often depend on the purpose of the room. Many people like to keep an open and airy feel in their kitchen, so the window curtains they select are tiers with a valance, or sometimes a valance alone at the top of the window. Privacy is important in the bathroom, so window curtains that provide for more modesty are a good choice. A darkened room is the best environment to get a restful night’s sleep, so blackout curtains are a good choice here. No matter the room you’ll want to find window curtains that coordinate with the decor of that room to give a coherent look and feel.
