Measuring Window Curtains
Before you head to the store or go online to start shopping for window curtains, it is important to know the size of the curtains you’ll need to buy. They way to figure out what size window curtains you are going to need is to measure your window for curtains. Measuring your windows for curtains isn’t difficult at all. But to be sure you purchase the right size and number of curtains careful attention should be paid to this step.
When measuring for window curtains, be sure to use a proper measuring tool. Don’t rely on a soft measuring tape that you use for sewing or measuring your body size. Use a metal tape measure to get the most accurate readings. A soft tape can sag or fall and could possibly give you an incorrect measurement for your window curtains.
The type and location of curtain rod you want to use plays a role in this process. Most curtain rods are hung six inches above the top of the window. Then based on where the curtain rod is located or will be located, determine what type of look are you going for with your window curtains. Do you want a curtain that just skims the bottom of the window, or do you want a dramatic window curtain that falls to your floor. The style of curtain you like comes in here as well, when it comes to determining the length of window curtain you’ll need to buy. Tab top or tie top curtains have a few inches on top that are not solid curtain. This will play a role in where you place your curtain rod. As a general rule, window curtains should fall two to three inches below the bottom of the window.
Once you’ve determined the length of the window curtains you need, you are going to want to measure the width of your windows next. Using the metal tape measure, place one end on the outside of the window casing and measure across to the other side. A general rule is that window curtains will extend two to three inches on either side of the window. Many people will like the look of full window curtains, so multiply your width measurement by two to achieve this look.
If you are going to hang cafe curtains, the placement of the curtain rod is important. Some people like them to be hung at the halfway point of the windows; others like to have them hung about one third of the distance below the top of the window. Based on your preference you can purchase the window curtains that would best fit your window.
